Is it Worth Spending More on Organic Cosmetics & Toiletries?

May 22, 2015 By: Abicomment

LINKS MARKED * ARE AFFILIATE LINKS.

woman-choosing-cosmeticsWe all love a treat, and for most women we love our cosmetics and toiletries. Whether it is a bottle of perfume, a new lipstick or a tub of body cream it feels good to treat ourselves – or even better, be treated by a loved one. But how much do we want to spend?

I ask this question because I have only in the last few months started to think about the ingredients in the cosmetics that I am buying and what they could be doing. This is something that I had never really thought about before, until I heard about trace chemicals that have been absorbed into your skin being found in babies umbilical cords! I was so shocked. But even though I was shocked it did make sense. If I am applying creams to my skin to help in some way then they will be absorbed into my body to have some sort of effect, to actually do what it was made to do. And when I was pregnant I was very conscientious of stretch marks, so I was applying creams and oils to my skin morning and night. But I was completely unaware of the fact that the chemicals that I was applying to my skin were then going through to my unborn baby through the umbilical cord. Scary!

So now that I am aware of this fact, how much do I feel that I should be spending on cosmetics and toiletries? I would love to buy only purely organic products for everything, but to be honest this isn’t really realistic for me. We all know that organic products whether they are food, clothing or toiletries come with a rather hefty price tag.

So how do I decide what I will splash the cash on? Well, being a mum my children will always come first. I know that you’re probably wondering what toiletries or cosmetics two little boys will need, but after each bath I apply a gel based cream to their bodies as they do get quite dry, they are both prone to eczema – all be it only slightly – but if I don’t apply cream then it can flare up. The product that I use is a double based gel prescribed by our doctor. It does seem to work, but I’m now concerned about the chemicals that are being absorbed into my boys bodies. So I have been doing a bit of research into what organic creams are available to replace the one I am currently using.

Here are a few that I have found:

  • Tropics – Tamanu Healing Balm £32.00 50ml

This is an all-natural healing balm that works wonders on dry and damaged skin, scars and cuts. The ingredients consist of tamanu oil, vitamin E, blackcurrent seed oil, shea butter, cocoa butter and monoi butter. Tropics pride themselves on not using harmful ingredients.

  • Mother & Baby Cowshed Full Body Cream £28.05 50ml

This full body cream from Cowshed* is highly nourishing and relieves dry and tender skin. The ingredients consist of aloe vera, shea butter and meadowfoam oil.

  • Hopes Relief Moisturising Lotion £17.29 145gm

Hopes Relief Moisturising Lotion* is an everyday moisturiser that is perfect for those prone to eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and dry skin. The ingredients consist of mango, shea and olive butter, it is free from nasties and it creates a natural barrier that is safe to use on babies upwards for a prolonged period of time.

As you can see, even in the natural and organic range the prices do still vary which makes it easier for you to find a product that you are happy with whatever your budget.

I’m not sure which one I want to try first, they all sound amazing! But I do know that if I want to nourish my children’s skin daily, I definitely don’t want to use any nasty chemicals which will get absorbed into their precious little bodies.

How about you, will you be making a change in the products you buy? Or do you already use organic products that you would love to recommend?
