September is here again and for most of us parents this means the beginning of a new school year for our kids. If we’re not careful this can be quite an expensive time of year, but trying to kit our kids out on a budget isn’t easy either. This is why I wanted to take a few moments to fill you all in on my recent back to school bargains, with the hope that you can grab some too!
Boys Winter Coats
Even though it is only the beginning of September when our schools re-open and the weather can still feel a bit warm, it is a good idea to have your children’s winter coats waiting in their wardrobes.
There are two reasons why I like to do this. The first reason is that you never know when the cold weather is going to kick in and the last thing I want is to not be prepared when that crisp morning arrives. The second reason I like to buy their winter coats early is because you have more chance of grabbing a bargain!
This is exactly what I did yesterday. I had decided that this year I wanted my boys to have proper waterproof coats, not just the shower resistant coats that I bought them last year. Living in Lancashire means that you have to be prepared for a lot of rain, so I decided to get them kitted out for the very wet weather that is guaranteed to make an appearance soon. However, I was very aware of the price tags that usually come with good quality waterproof coats! I was over the moon, then, when my friend told me about the sale that outdoor clothing retailer Trespass currently have on. So we went to our local store and managed to pick up two brilliant coats from their ‘Back to School’ range in the sale. Each coat should have been £50 but instead we got them for £19.99 each. Bargain!
The second area that can be a real pain to shop for is school shoes. There are so many price variations and shoe styles to choose from that it can be quite confusing. Personally, I have never had a problem with buying my boys their school shoes from the supermarket, usually either Sainsbury’s or Asda. This time however I bought my eldest son a pair of leather school shoes from Sainsbury’s that cost £16, but after only one day of wearing them, they were so uncomfortable that I had to return them to the store.
So, I had a look on the Trespass website to see if they sold school shoes, and I was thrilled to find a pair of good quality boys school shoes that had been reduced from £24.99 to just £5.99! I phoned up my local store to have them put aside until I could pick them up that evening (because he needed them for the next day). If you prefer to shop online they do have a delivery service that is free when you spend over £50 or £3.95 for standard delivery if you spend less than that. They also offer a Click and Collect service, which of course is free and your items should be in your local shop in around 1-3 working days.
So, there we have it, my back to school bargains that have saved me a small fortune. At full price the two coats and school shoes should have cost us £125.00, however, buying them in the sale meant that we only had to spend £45.99. Now don’t get me wrong, if it wasn’t for the sale then I doubt that we would have paid the full price for these items, but it does go to show that shopping around in the sales can mean that you get much higher quality goods for the same price as you would find in the supermarkets.
